Fact or Fiction?

We know how exciting it is to come across a statistic that claims a vegan diet will cure you of serious ailments and prevent climate change. But, as we’re sure you’re aware, not everything we read on the Internet can be trusted.

This is why we’ve done our research (some of us didn’t study research science for nothing!) and established which vegan statistics are scientifically backed. We’ve also kept extrapolation to a minimum and linked back to all of our sources, so you can check out the data for yourself. In other words, you’ll find no clickbait stats here, only the cold hard facts (and a few estimates).

After all, if we’re going to do an article on the best vegan statistics in 2021, we might as well do it broccoli 🥦

Vegan Population Statistics

Maybe you’re looking for some new plant-based friends to debate with or perhaps you’re searching for new love interests on the latest vegan dating app. Wherever your interests may lie, we’re sure you’re eager to know where all of the other vegans are. And who are we to deny you this information?

You may be surprised to learn that there are quite a lot of us!

How many vegans in Berlin?

According to The Independent (a British newspaper), there are an estimated 80,000 vegans in Berlin. Whilst we’re not sure where they pulled this number from, Sebastian Zösch, the managing director of VEBU (Vegetarierbund) German Vegetarian Society, has also been quoted stating this number.

However, before you go reeling that statistic off like it’s a fact, we recommend waiting until Statista releases a new and dependable population study! They’re conducting more and more surveys regarding veganism, so it’s only a matter of time before we find a more up-to-date statistic about the number of vegans in Berlin.

For now, rest assured that there are quite a lot of us! How do we know? Some of the VEGCRAVER team live here, there are 16+ vegan caterers in Berlin and, as you’ll see in a minute, an awful lot of plant-based restaurants. With so many vegan businesses in Germany’s capital, it’s not so hard to envisage 80,000 of us.

Now you know roughly how many vegans there are in Berlin, you can move here and make some new best spuddies 🥔 we’ll be your friends!

How many vegans in Germany?

This one’s a bit easier to answer since Statista recently conducted and published a large scale survey in 2021. Their results show that approximately 5% of 20 to 29 year olds living in Germany follow a vegan diet. According to DeStatis, there were 24.5 million 20 to 40 year olds in 2020, so…hang on, how do we work this one out?

Not to worry, we found another study conducted by Veganz in 2020. Their survey revealed that 3.2% of the German population now identifies as vegan. To put that into a figure we can more easily understand, that’s 2.6 million vegans in Germany, which is double the number of vegans recorded in a 2016 study conducted by Skopos.

Once again though, we would err on the side of caution when stating this as fact since the study only involved 2,600 participants from seven European countries and interviewed between 218 and 518 people aged 15 to 64 from each.

How many vegans in the world?

According to an Ipsos MORI global survey on diets around the world, 3% of the world’s population followed a vegan diet in 2018. Seems a bit high to you? Well, you never know…but the survey was only conducted in 28 countries, so these figures may be slightly biased! Nevertheless, if we consider the huge growth veganism has experienced in recent years, it’s not too difficult to believe that this vegan statistic might be accurate in 2021.

Vegan Food and Drink Statistics

How many vegan restaurants are there in Berlin?

As we write this (November 2021), there are 789 vegan- and vegetarian-friendly Berlin restaurants listed on HappyCow, 97 of which are 100% vegan. As I’m sure many of you are aware, whilst HappyCow is pretty much the Holy Grail for vegans looking for plant-based establishments, there are almost always a few vegan restaurants that haven’t yet been listed on their website. So there are probably more than 97 vegan restaurants in Berlin.

Does Berlin have a vegan supermarket?

Yes! Veganz, Europe’s first vegan supermarket chain, was founded right here in Berlin! It now produces its own products and recently won Germany’s Most Innovative Food Brand in 2021. We also have dozens of other vegan stores and stalls, including Teto Tofu (a soy specialist shop selling handmade tofu, tempeh, and natto), L’Herbivore (vegan store that sells plant-based meats), and plenty of fashion shops, such as Avesu, DearGoods, and LOVECO.

Vegan Health Statistics

How many people go vegan for health reasons?

Healthy vegan food on a plate

According to the Waitrose Food and Drink Report 2018-19, 45% of vegans and vegetarians surveyed changed their diets because of health reasons! That’s a lot but it seems as though animal welfare was a more common concern, with 55% of the participants claiming that was their biggest motive. 38% changed their diets for environmental reasons, which leads us on…

Veganism and the Environment Statistics

Can veganism solve climate change?

A study conducted by Oxford University Researchers in 2014 suggested that vegans contribute 99 to 102% less dietary emissions than meat-eaters. Of course, the literature varies on this subject and, as we’re sure you can imagine, statistics like this are often estimates based on varying modelling methods. Emissions are also not the only metric of sustainability. Other systems, including carbon sequestration, water quality, and soil acidification also need to be taken under consideration.

Nevertheless, in 2018, the most comprehensive analysis to date of damage generated by farming revealed that avoiding meat and dairy products was the single biggest way to reduce your environmental impact on the planet. The research demonstrated how a vegan food system could be used to cut down global farmland usage by 75% and still feed the world’s entire population.

In other words, if the world turned toward a more vegan food system, more land can be rewilded, there will be fewer greenhouse gas emissions, a reduction in freshwater usage for livestock, and more opportunities for carbon sequestration…to name but a few environmental benefits. So, whilst we can’t claim that veganism can solve climate change, it can certainly contribute to a healthier planet.
